Use the slice curve brush, hold ctrl and shift to slice, alt to make the curve and spacebar to move. Release will slice your mesh creating separate poly groups. It's only isolating a few random polygroups on a model I'm working on, and only when I Ctrl + Shift click on them on a specific spot.
